In case you did not receive it, or you are a community college student, here is a message from Scholarships and Financial Aid at CMU that may assist you in regard to filing your FAFSA:
Dear CMU Student,
If you are planning to return to Central Michigan University for the Fall 2015 semester, it is time to apply for financial aid for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Students and parents can now complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
The Central Michigan University Federal School Code is 002243.
We recommend filing your FAFSA no later than February 22, 2015. To qualify as an on-time filer by the State of Michigan, the Central Processing Service must receive your application by March 1, 2015.
Students (and parents of dependent students) will need a federal PIN to apply on the web. The PIN serves as your signature when you apply online. If you and your parent (only one parent needs a PIN) have federal PINs you have used previously, you can continue to use them for 2015-16. If you and/or your parent do not have a PIN, you can request one online at www.pin.ed.gov.
IRS DATA RETRIEVAL PROCESS FOR THE 2015-2016 FAFSA
The CMU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid encourages financial aid applicants (students and their parents) to import tax information from the IRS for the 2015-16 FAFSA. The IRS Data Retrieval tool saves time and reduces the probability of being chosen for verification. Those who do not utilize the IRS Data Retrieval tool may be selected for verification and be required to submit Tax Return Transcript to the CMU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
What is the IRS Data Retrieval tool?
The IRS Data Retrieval tool will allow FAFSA applicants to request and retrieve their tax return data from the IRS. Once the data is retrieved from the IRS, it can be transferred to the FAFSA online.
Who can use the IRS Data Retrieval tool?
Dependent and independent applicants must:
- Have a valid Social Security Number (SSN)
- Have filed a 2014 federal tax return, and
- Have an unchanged marital status since December 31, 2014
While completing the FAFSA, applicants will be presented with questions to identify whether they may be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval process.
The CMU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid recommends that financial aid applicants file their 2014 federal tax returns as early in the 2015 calendar year as possible so that their tax data is available through the IRS Data Retrieval tool when filing the 2015-2016 FAFSA. The "IRS Data Retrieval" process for the 2015-2016 FAFSA is tentatively scheduled to be available February 2, 2015. Tax return data is available through the IRS Data Retrieval tool within 3 weeks of electronic tax filing or 10 weeks of paper tax filing.
